UNIVERSITY OF THE PELOPONNESE
The Diploma Supplement (DS)
The Diploma Supplement (DS) is a document accompanying a higher education diploma, providing a standardised description of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies completed by its holder. It is produced by the higher education institutions according to standards agreed by the European Commission, the Council of Europe and UNESCO.
The Diploma Supplement is not:
• a substitute for the original diploma or degree;
• an automatic system that guarantees recognition.
Diploma Supplement - benefits for students:
• a qualification that is more readable and easily comparable abroad
• a precise description of their academic career and the competencies acquired during their studies
• easier access to opportunities for work or further studies abroad.
Diploma Supplement - for higher education institutions:
• more transparent qualifications (thanks to easier academic and professional recognition)
• continued national/institutional autonomy within a common framework accepted throughout Europe
• informed judgements about qualifications that can be understood in other educational contexts
• greater visibility of the institution abroad
• enhanced employment prospects for their graduates, both at home and abroad
• time savings - by answering many of the questions commonly asked of institutions about the content and portability of their qualifications.
The Diploma Supplement is issued by the secretary of the Faculties of the Institution automatically upon completion of a course of studies, without any financial burden, in both Greek and English. Supplement’s date of issue shall not necessarily coincide with diploma’s one, but may never be earlier than that
The Diploma Supplement was designed by UNESCO and the Council of Europe and was adopted by the European Parliament in 2004 (Decision No 2241/2004/EC on a single Community framework for the transparency of qualifications and competences).
The Diploma Supplement was established in article 15 of Law 3374 (Government Gazette A189/02.08.2005) on "Quality Assurance in Higher Education - Transfer and Accreditation System - Diploma Supplement". Ministerial Decision F5/72535/B3/18-7-2006 (Government Gazette B 1091) as corrected by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (Bug fixes GG 2161 / 8-11 -2007 sq. B) includes Definition of Diploma Supplement.
